Kurdistan's Iraq, Kuwait affirm need to promote tourism cooperation

IRBIL, Nov 21 (KUNA) -- Iraq's Kurdistan and the State of Kuwait "agree on the necessity of promoting common tourist activities" between the two sides, said the Kuwaiti General Consul in Irbil, Dr. Omar Al-Kandari.
Al-Kandari, in a statement to KUNA during a meeting with the head of the tourism authority in the region, Mawlawi Jabbar, that he concurred with the Kurdish official on the necessity of encouraging tourism in a joint manner. "We have discussed cultural and tourist exchanges and holding of various activities including festivals, cultural and artistic weeks in the Kurdistan region," he said.
The Kurdistan's tourism authority has invited the tourism department of the Kuwaiti Ministry of Information to attend an international tourism conference, due on September 1-2, 2015, in Irbil. The General Consul said a number of Kuwaiti companies would take part in the convention.
Meanwhile, Jabbar expressed satisfaction at the opening of the Kuwaiti diplomatic mission's headquarters in the region, noting the local leadership's keenness on promoting tourism and investments. He acknowledged that the tourism sector has suffered a setback since 2014, due to the warfare against the ISIL militants.
The Kurdish region is renowned for tourist sites, moderate weather and panoramic sceneries. It boasts of up to 600 hotels. (end) sbr.rk
