TEHRAN- Transit of commodities via Iran rose 14 percent during the ten-month period from March 21, 2018 to January 20, 2019 from the same period of time in the previous year, IRNA reported on Monday citing the data released by Iran’s Trade Promotion Organization (TPO).

The TPO data put the value of commodities transited from Iran at $2.905 billion during the mentioned ten-month period, increasing $358 million from $2.547 billion in the same period of time in the past year.

Transit of goods via air borders stood at $366 million, via sea borders at $133 million, and via roads at $2.314 billion during the eleven-month period of this year.

As reported, transit of commodities via air borders increased eight percent, via sea borders decreased six percent, and via roads rose 18 percent in the mentioned time span of this year compared to that of the previous year.

As previously announced by the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA), transit of goods through Iran rose 24 percent in the past Iranian calendar year (ended on March 20, 2018).

The data released by IRICA and also Iran’s Road Maintenance and Transportation Organization indicate that transit of goods via Iran experienced an increasing trend in the previous calendar year.

Regarding its geographical location Iran can play a significant role in transit of goods in the region and benefit a lot from its status in this due. To take advantage of its location for transit, the country has many plans underway and on the agenda to boost its transit capacity.

Some of these plans include developing Iran’s largest container port, Shahid Rajaee Port in southern province of Hormozgan, and also Chabahar Port in southeast of the country, connecting the ports to the railway network, development of transit via railway, and also some customs measures such as improving transit procedures in the customs offices.
